Natural Explorers

Hello everyone,

Despite the dreary weather this week we were able to get outside three days to work on our non-fiction leaf stories. Some students have decided that their stories have become more poetic and less narrative, so your child may tell you that they have been working on their leaf "Poetry."

It has been so wonderful to take our writing sessions into nature. Our school offers so many wonderful opportunities to be outside, whether it be in the garden, the woods or even just a field. Students have been  focusing on one of their five senses while outside to help inspire their writing. This technique has also served to engage their scientific observation. Science and writing have really become intermingled this week and it has been such a pleasure to see students drawing connections and enjoyment from both subjects.

In science this week we focused on the concepts of predictions and outcomes. On Wednesday we conducted the "Fizz" experiment with Ms. Leggett's class. We observed to see what would happen when we combined vinegar and baking soda in a plastic bag as well as in a paper cup. We discovered that in science we are often surprised by the outcome and that our predictions are sometimes proven or disproved.

Have a wonderful weekend!
